OAGEE
Ontario's geographers are changing the guards!

The Ontario Association for Geographic and Environmental Education is changing the Guard. Paul VanZant has been the President for the past four years.  He has navigated the organization and all its members through a forest of governmental changes and curriculum reviews. Paul will now withdraw to the "less active role" of past president where he will organize this summer's Teacher Institute, OAGEE’s participation in the CCGE's Geography Symposium, coach his school team, run his geography department and look after his own family! Thanks for a job well done Paul!!

Kim Earle is the person who will assume command of the organization as she begins her term in office in 2005. Kim's three goals are to discuss and solve issues facing geography today, maintain a strong presence at the Ministry of Education for geography and expand the opportunities for professional development for educators in geography. The Monograph is one publication that fulfills this role. It is THE professional development publication for geography teachers. Check out the OAGEE web site for details on how to subscribe and how to submit articles. www.oagee.org .

NEWS FROM ST. JOHN'S CHAPTER

All of us from the St. John's chapter of the CCGE have been very busy over the past 9 months.  Our efforts have included promotion of Geography in the K-12 system of the province, participation in The Great Canadian Geography Challenge, media interviews, and raising the profile of Geography throughout the community.  In these efforts, we've benefited greatly through our liaison with the educational and outreach efforts of the Canadian Association of Geographers.  We are fortunate to have the President of the CAG, Dr. Chris Sharpe, here at the Department of Geography of Memorial University. Through our philosophy of shared expertise, involving both professional educators and professional geographers, and outreach we have contributed to the quality progress of geographic education in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador.

We’re continuing to expand our activities, and will be contributing to the strengthening of Geographic Education through contributions to the Virtual Teaching Centre, managed by the Newfoundland & Labrador Teachers Association; through liaison and geographic course development with the Ministry of Education; and by participating fully in all the national initiatives of the CCGE.

On behalf of the St. John's Chapter, I warmly invite you to visit us in Newfoundland & Labrador, to see our cultural and physical landscapes and to talk Geography! For more information, contact Dr. Norm Catto, Chair at: ncatto@mun.ca.
