The Phyllis Arnold Professional Development Award is
an annual award that will help Canadian teachers to participate in conferences or professional-development
courses in geography. Mrs. Arnold received the 2001 Geographic
Literacy Award from the Canadian Council for Geographic
Education, and used her award, along with a personal
donation, to create the Phyllis Arnold Endowment fund.
Teachers across Canada can apply for the Phyllis Arnold
Professional Development Award to facilitate their work
in the classroom, school, district, and community. Arnold
Award applications are accepted yearly in the spring
from any current teacher in an accredited K-12
school within Canada.
Amounts and Deadlines
Each year, the Canadian Council for Geographic
Education plans to make approximately $500 in
personal awards to reward you for making an even
greater impact in your classroom, school, district,
and/or community through geographic professional
development education. This award is given
to assist in the participation of geographic professional development
in the current school year.
Applications for summer 2007 or the 2007–2008 school year must be received by close of business
(5 P.M. ET) May 1, 2008. Awards will be announced by June 1, 2008.

briefly explaining why the nominee is to be considered. In order
to be eligible for the Arnold Award each applicant must be a member

in these guidelines and for clarity. The committee
will assess applications that meet initial requirements
and make recommendations for funding awards. Announcements
and letters of intent will be issued to the award
winner. It is expected that final decisions will
be made within four weeks of the application deadline.
Reporting
Acceptance of an Arnold Professional Development
Award entails the applicant will
be pursuing geographic professional development
during the application year. Recipients are required
to submit a very brief summative report (no more
than 200 words) in their application detailing
the professional development to be attended and how
they intend to implement the strategies they will learn
into the classroom.
