Geography is about knowing where things are. It's about being able to read a map to find your way, calculate the time difference before making a long distance call, and even situate a place or event heard in the news on your mental map of the world.

But geography is also about understanding why things are located where they are. It deals with the Earth and its divisions into continents, countries, cities, towns and even streets and sidewalks. And that's not all: geography also looks at the climate, animal and plant life, people, resources, industries and products of all these divisions. So by knowing geography, we can see how historical processes and present activities influence places, people and things. A knowledge of geography is becoming increasingly important as tools like the Internet take us to every corner of the world with the click of a button.

Geography is about life-long learning. The world is constantly changing and what we see today will certainly be different than what we will experience in years to come. With knowledge of geography, we are better prepared to understand, interpret and find our place in this changing world.
