LINDA GOLLICK HAS BEEN A HIGH SCHOOL TEACHER FOR THE PAST 25 YEARS,
'and proud of it!' She received her B.A. Geography from the University
of Windsor, and began to teach almost as soon as she was finished university.
She believes that it is very important that a student receive the best geography education possible. Geography should not simply be in terms of what city is on what river, but in terms of how issues such as farming, the environment, resource use (and development) are affected by geography, and how by studying the problems others have had we might avoid those problems. She wants to raise the awareness of her students for cause and effect on a global level.
This passion for geographic education has led Linda to be the Ontario Co-ordinator of the Great
Canadian Geography Challenge for the past 4 years. She reflected on how things have changed in our understanding of geography since she began to teach, that our understanding has not stood still.. Linda spoke of how it was thought 25 years ago that earthquakes in Ontario were caused by the land rebounding from under the weight of the glaciers that covered the land 10,000 years ago, and how now we know that there are actually many faults under Ontario, and that these cause the quakes. She sees geography as an outlet for the students 'to broaden what people's image of geography was, not just map oriented... not just academics, but the social aspect as well.'
Presently Linda Gollick teaches geography at Loretto College
School in Toronto for grades 9 to O.A.C. She is also a member
of the Ontario Association
of Geographic and Environmental Educators (OAGEE), a group dedicated to making geography instructors as current as possible. She is also involved (still!) as the Ontario Co-ordinator of the Great
Canadian Geography Challenge.
