  Hillsborough River > From Away
  Hillsborough River - From Away

Charlottetown relies on world tourism

Some older islanders still refer to visitors as people "from away." But many modern visitors feel right at home because the island seems immediately familiar —thanks to the writings of Lucy Maud Montgomery.

Anne of Green Gables and Anne of Avonlea have made Prince Edward Island a romantic destination for millions of people from around the world. British roots and a resistance to change have shaped the island character.

Perched on a broad harbour that opens into the Northumberland Strait at the mouth of the Hillsborough River, Charlottetown is the main tourism base. It is the starting point for excursions to the island's famous beaches and the rich, agricultural hinterland that begins right outside its city limits.
