Saskatoon is sometimes called the "City of Bridges" because
of its seven spans that straddle the South Saskatchewan River.
It was once better known as the "Wonder City" because
of its sudden emergence from the seeming-vacuum of the boundless
Prairies.
The first white settlers arrived in 1883 after the area had
been selected to be a "temperance colony" where alcohol
would be banned. The rapid development of prairie agriculture
caused Saskatoon to boom.
Saskatoon today is an urban multicultural city of Cree, Mennonite,
Ukrainian, Scandinavian, Dutch, Austrian, and Polish cultures.
Most recently, Asians and South Americans have arrived to contribute
to Saskatoon's community blend.
