The Phyllis Arnold Professional Development Subsidy is an annual subsidy that will help Canadian teachers to participate in conferences or professional-development courses in geography. Mrs. Arnold received the 2001 Geographic Literacy Award from the Canadian Council for Geographic Education, and used her award, along with a personal donation, to create the Phyllis Arnold Endowment fund. Teachers across Canada can apply for the Phyllis Arnold Professional Development Subsidy to facilitate their work in the classroom, school, district, and community. Arnold Subsidy applications are accepted yearly in the spring from any current teacher in an accredited K-12 school within Canada.

Amounts and Deadlines
Each year, the Canadian Council for Geographic Education plans to make approximately $500 in personal subsidies to reward you for making an even greater impact in your classroom, school, district, and/or community through geographic professional development education. This award is given to assist in the participation of geographic professional development in the current school year.

Applications for each school year must be received by close of business (5 P.M. ET) May 1st. Subsidies will be announced by June 1st.

Application Guidelines and How to Apply
Applications must be forwarded to the Chair of the CCGE Awards committee, briefly explaining why the nominee is to be considered. In order to be eligible for the Arnold Subsidy each applicant must be a member of the CCGE. Applications will be given favourable consideration if they can demonstrate the need of the professional development to the applicant and the willingness of the applicant to replicate learning in the classroom situation.

Every application must be filled in completely and must be mailed to:

CCGE Awards Committee
The Canadian Council for Geographic Education
Suite 200, 1155 Lola Street
Ottawa (Ontario) K1K 4C1
NOTE : Applications may also be faxed to (613) 744-0947

Selection Process
Each application will be reviewed by the CCGE Awards Committee against the requirements outlined in these guidelines and for clarity. The committee will assess applications that meet initial requirements and make recommendations for funding subsidies. Announcements and letters of intent will be issued to the award winner. It is expected that final decisions will be made within four weeks of the application deadline.

Reporting
Acceptance of an Arnold Professional Development Subsidy entails the applicant will be pursuing geographic professional development during the application year. Recipients are required to submit a very brief summative report (no more than 200 words) in their application detailing the professional development to be attended and how they intend to implement the strategies they will learn into the classroom.
